FountoulakisDear colleagues,

It's a great pleasure to invite you to the Summer 2020 ULTRA CLASS, a new initiative of the International Society on Neurobiology and Psychopharmacology, fully internet-based which aims to push the limits of education and training. During these difficult times of the COVID-19 outbreak with the limitations and the problems it caused to scientific work and education, every effort should be made to minimize or even over-compensate the damage.

The ULTRA CLASS will focus on Bipolar disorder with the aim to provide an ‘A to Z’ approach. It will go beyond the usual Master Class and will try on one hand to fulfill the needs of the clinician who fights in the first line for the treatment of real-world patients by providing him/her with a global and comprehensive update of the newest developments in Psychiatry and the allied sciences, in a way both focused and enriched. On the other hand, it will utilize the most modern internet technology in order to bring together experts and audience from around the world in a truly interactive way. The challenges of this are enormous but also the expected benefits are similarly enormous.

The ULTRA CLASS is the brain child of the ISNP in collaboration with the ‘Evidence based Psychiatry’ and ‘Psychopharmacology’ sections of the World Psychiatric Association. In this effort, the strict scientific method will come together with the humanistic tradition of psychiatry and life sciences, and the continuous and unconditional investment on the high level training of professionals and education of patients and their families. These are the modern needs and have emerged as a significant challenge during the last few decades. Medical scientists and public health policy makers are increasingly concerned that the scientific discoveries are failing to be translated efficiently into tangible human benefit while unproven but charming methods continue to consume resources and to exert a negative influence on the health and wellbeing of patients.

Eloquence rather than essence has been the prevailing driving force in the mental health field for centuries, but today we experience a significant shift in the paradigm. Nevertheless, in an all the more complex and technologically advanced environment, the human factor emerges always as the most valuable one, the factor that determines the final outcome since it is the ultimate interpreter and user of information, knowledge and wisdom.

We count on your active participation throughout the ULTRA CLASS and we expect that new horizons in training and education will open in these difficult times of the COVID-19 outbreak.

As hosts and organizers, shall spare no effort in making your participation scientifically rewarding but also as enjoyable as possible.
